2009 Norwegian Spiral Anomaly: The Mystery Behind the Giant Sky Spiral
The Mystery Begins
On the morning of December 9, 2009, residents across northern Norway looked into the pre-dawn sky and saw something that appeared almost impossible.
A brilliant blue-green beam seemed to rise into the darkness. At one end was a huge luminous spiral that gradually expanded across the sky. The shape looked almost perfectly geometric, with a dark circular area in its center.
For several minutes, people watched the strange display grow and change.
Some initially wondered whether they were seeing an unusual form of the aurora borealis. Others thought it might be a meteor, a secret military experiment, an unidentified aircraft, or something far stranger.
Photographs quickly appeared online, and because the phenomenon was visible from widely separated locations, the first assumption that the images were simply digitally manipulated did not hold up.
The event became known internationally as the Norwegian Spiral, Norway Spiral, or 2009 Norwegian Spiral Anomaly.
Today, the evidence points strongly to a failed Russian RSM-56 Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missile test. But when the spiral appeared, nobody on the ground knew that.
When and Where Did It Happen?

Reports and photographs came from areas including:
- Tromsø
- Skjervøy

The event was not actually taking place directly above Tromsø or Skjervøy.
Later photographic and scientific analysis placed the phenomenon over the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia, at extremely high altitude.
A 2014 peer-reviewed study placed the missile destruction at around 200 kilometres altitude, while later analysis gave an estimated altitude range of approximately 170–260 kilometres.
This distinction is important.
People in Norway were seeing the phenomenon from hundreds of kilometres away.
What Did People Actually See?
The reports were remarkably similar in their broad description.
Witnesses described:
- a bright blue or blue-green light
- a beam or trail extending toward the horizon
- a luminous spiral
- an expanding circular or spiral-shaped cloud
- a dark central area
- movement and rotation
- a spectacular increase in apparent size
- the phenomenon gradually disappearing
Photographer Jan-Petter Jørgensen, who photographed the event from Skjervøy, reported seeing the phenomenon at approximately 7:50 a.m. He later described being extremely surprised by what he saw.
Another witness in Harstad, Nick Banbury, described initially seeing something resembling a green beam and then a rotating spiral that became much larger.
The event was visible from widely separated locations, which became one of the strongest pieces of evidence that this was a high-altitude phenomenon rather than something happening close to a single town.
The Most Famous Photographs
One of the best-known sequences was photographed by Jan-Petter Jørgensen from the Skjervøy area.
The photographs show the phenomenon changing over time rather than simply sitting motionless in one position.
Other photographs were taken from locations including Harstad, Markenes, Storsteinnes and northern Sweden.
The existence of photographs from different locations was particularly important because researchers could compare the apparent position of the spiral against mountains and other geographical landmarks.
This eventually allowed researchers to estimate where the phenomenon actually occurred.
The surviving photographic record therefore does more than simply show that a strange light existed—it provides information about its movement and geometry.
Why Did It Look Like a Giant Spiral?
This is the part that made the event so mysterious.
A normal rocket launch usually produces a relatively familiar-looking exhaust trail.
But the Bulava missile was experiencing a serious technical problem during its flight.
Scientific analysis concluded that the malfunctioning rocket stage began producing an unusual expanding cloud of exhaust and combustion products.
The stage's movement caused the material to spread in a rotating or tumbling pattern.
Because the event occurred extremely high in the atmosphere, the exhaust cloud expanded dramatically.
From the ground, observers were looking toward a gigantic cloud of material illuminated by sunlight.
The result was an enormous spiral.
A 2011 analysis by researchers Yu. V. Platov and S. A. Chernouss proposed that the spiral was connected with tumbling of the rocket's third stage and an abnormal exhaust flow. They noted that the shape of the expanding cloud was consistent with rotation occurring in more than one direction.
The Strange Blue-Green Beam
The blue-green portion of the phenomenon also has a scientific explanation.
Solid-fuel rocket exhaust can contain compounds involving aluminium and other materials.
Researchers studying the event noted that blue-green optical emissions are known from solid-fuel rocket exhaust under twilight conditions.
The 2011 study specifically discussed emissions involving Al, AlO and lithium-related compounds, with sunlight scattering and fluorescence contributing to the observed appearance.
In other words, the unusual colour was not evidence that the object itself was blue.
It was the result of sunlight interacting with material released by the rocket high above Earth.
Was There Really a "Black Hole" in the Sky?
No.
Several photographs made the center of the spiral look like a gigantic black hole.
It was one of the most unsettling features of the event.
But scientists did not interpret it as an actual black hole.
The apparent dark center was a visual effect produced by the geometry and expansion of the illuminated material.
The 2011 scientific analysis specifically explained that there was no physical black hole forming in the atmosphere.
As the rocket's engine stopped and material continued expanding outward, the center could appear increasingly dark against the surrounding luminous cloud.
The Russian Missile Connection
The biggest breakthrough came when information about a Russian missile test began to emerge.
Russia had been conducting tests of the Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missile.
On December 9, 2009, the Russian submarine Dmitry Donskoy launched a Bulava missile from the White Sea.
The test failed.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry's statement, the first two stages worked normally, but a technical problem occurred during the third stage.
The timing was extraordinarily close to the Norwegian sighting.
Russian officials confirmed the failed test on December 10, the day after the strange spiral appeared.
That transformed the mystery.
What had initially looked like an unexplained object suddenly had a plausible source: a malfunctioning Russian missile producing an enormous illuminated exhaust cloud.
The Bulava Missile
The RSM-56 Bulava was designed as a submarine-launched ballistic missile for Russia's strategic nuclear forces.
The missile was a three-stage solid-propellant rocket.
The December 9 test was part of a troubled testing program.
The missile had experienced several failures during its development, making another unsuccessful test particularly significant.
Scientific literature identifies the December 9 event as a Bulava test launched from the White Sea and associates the subsequent optical phenomenon with the missile's destruction at high altitude.
The Dmitry Donskoy Submarine
The missile was launched from the Russian nuclear-powered submarine Dmitry Donskoy, also known as TK-208.
The submarine was being used as a test platform for the Bulava missile program.
According to the scientific record, the missile was launched from an underwater position in the White Sea at approximately 06:45 UTC.
The launch itself was not visible to people in Norway in the same way as the later high-altitude optical effects because of the geometry, Earth's curvature and lighting conditions.
The spectacular part became visible when the missile reached much higher altitude and its exhaust products were illuminated by the Sun.
What Happened to the Missile?
There is an important distinction between what is firmly established and what has been reconstructed scientifically.
Firmly established
- A Bulava missile was launched from the White Sea.
- The launch failed.
- Russia confirmed a technical problem.
- The unusual Norwegian sky phenomenon occurred at essentially the same time.
- Independent scientific research connected the phenomenon to the missile.
- Later research detected atmospheric effects associated with the missile's destruction.
Less certain
The exact mechanical sequence that produced the spiral is not completely documented in publicly available telemetry.
Researchers have proposed that the malfunction caused the stage to tumble or rotate abnormally and that exhaust was expelled in an unusual direction.
A 2011 study suggested that an abnormal stage-separation event could have contributed to the tumbling motion.
Therefore, it is safer to say:

How High Was the Spiral?
This is another area where different sources have given slightly different numbers.
Early reports had very rough estimates because observers were seeing the event from the ground without knowing its distance.

The same research used photographs and other observations to place the event over the Kola Peninsula.

These numbers should not be presented as an exact GPS-style altitude.
They are scientific estimates.
Why Was It Visible in Norway?
The missile was launched from the White Sea region of Russia.
The spectacular cloud developed at extreme altitude.
At that height, the material could be illuminated by sunlight even though it was still dark or twilight for observers on the ground.
This created a remarkable lighting situation:
Observers on the dark side of Earth → high-altitude exhaust → sunlight illuminating the exhaust from above.
The contrast made the plume appear extraordinarily bright against the dark morning sky.
A Russian Academy of Sciences analysis specifically noted that the missile's flight area was illuminated by sunlight while observers were on Earth's night side.
Why Did the Spiral Look So Large?
The spiral was not a solid object hundreds of kilometres wide.
It was a huge cloud of expanding exhaust and combustion products.
At extreme altitude, the atmosphere is much thinner than at Earth's surface.
Material released by a rocket can therefore expand enormously.
The phenomenon was also very far from many observers.
That combination of:
- enormous distance
- extreme altitude
- expanding exhaust
- sunlight illumination
- perspective
made the structure appear gigantic.
One scientific reconstruction using photographs from multiple locations estimated that the apparent void associated with the phenomenon expanded to hundreds of kilometres during its evolution. Such estimates are model-dependent rather than direct measurements.
How Long Did It Last?
Reports vary somewhat because witnesses began watching at different moments and were located in different places.
Contemporary eyewitness descriptions generally put the visible display at several minutes.
Some early descriptions suggested around two or three minutes, while broader summaries described the phenomenon as lasting up to approximately ten minutes.
The difference is partly due to what observers considered the beginning and end of the event.
The scientific literature treats the event as a rapidly evolving high-altitude phenomenon rather than a stationary object remaining in one place for a long period.
The "Stationary UFO" Question
Some early descriptions made the spiral sound as though it appeared to stop in the sky.
Later analysis challenged that interpretation.
Researchers compared photographs taken from different locations and at different moments.
The spiral's position and shape changed over time.
A detailed photographic reconstruction by Tony Spell concluded that the phenomenon was moving and evolving rather than simply hovering motionless above Norway.
This is important because apparent motion can be extremely misleading when observing a distant atmospheric phenomenon without knowing its actual distance.
The First Theories
Before Russia acknowledged the missile failure, people had very little information.
Several explanations appeared almost immediately.
1. An Unusual Aurora
Norway is one of the world's best-known locations for observing the northern lights.
So an auroral explanation was naturally considered.
But the shape and behaviour of this event were dramatically different from ordinary auroral displays.
Contemporary scientific commentary therefore considered a normal aurora unlikely.
2. A Meteor
Some people initially considered a meteor or fireball.
The problem was the duration and structure.
A typical meteor crosses the atmosphere rapidly.

Norwegian astronomer Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard reportedly considered a fireball initially but rejected that interpretation because the phenomenon lasted too long.
3. Secret Military Technology
Because the phenomenon appeared near Russia and was unlike anything most people had seen before, secret military technology became another popular theory.
The Cold War legacy and Russia's missile program made this theory particularly attractive.
Ironically, there really was a military missile involved—but it was a failed test rather than an unknown spacecraft.
4. A UFO
UFO enthusiasts naturally became interested.
The shape looked unlike a conventional aircraft.
There was no obvious airplane body, wings or helicopter structure.
The event also appeared to behave in ways that were difficult for ordinary observers to understand.
Some people therefore proposed that it could have been an extraterrestrial spacecraft or some kind of unknown technology.
However, once the missile launch was confirmed and scientific modelling supported the rocket explanation, the UFO interpretation lost most of its evidential basis.
5. A Wormhole or Stargate
This became one of the more famous Internet theories.
The spiral's enormous circular shape and dark center reminded people of science-fiction depictions of wormholes.
Some UFO websites and commentators suggested that a portal or wormhole might have opened in the Norwegian sky.
There is no scientific evidence that a wormhole was involved.
The idea was speculation driven largely by the appearance of the photographs.
6. The Large Hadron Collider
Another Internet theory attempted to connect the spiral with experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider.
Some people speculated that high-energy physics experiments might somehow have created a dimensional anomaly.
There is no credible scientific evidence connecting the Norwegian Spiral with CERN.
The idea became part of the online mythology surrounding the event rather than an evidence-based explanation.
7. EISCAT
Another theory focused on EISCAT, the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association's atmospheric research facilities in northern Scandinavia.
Because EISCAT conducts experiments involving the ionosphere and was geographically associated with the region, some people wondered whether the facility could have produced the spiral.
Researchers at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory later recalled receiving questions from people who thought the event might have been caused by an EISCAT experiment.
That theory was not supported by the subsequent evidence.
The event was ultimately associated with the Russian missile test over the Kola Peninsula.
8. HAARP and Other Conspiracy Theories
As the photographs spread around the Internet, some commentators attempted to connect the event with HAARP, electromagnetic experiments, plasma phenomena and other controversial ideas.
These claims were not supported by evidence demonstrating that HAARP caused the event.
The strongest evidence instead connects the phenomenon with the documented Russian missile launch.
This is a useful example of how a real unexplained event can quickly accumulate unrelated explanations online.
9. A Sign From God
Not all early interpretations were technological.
The 2011 scientific paper reviewing the event noted that contemporary discussion ranged from alien invasion to religious interpretations and supposed signs from God.
These interpretations reflected the extraordinary appearance of the phenomenon rather than scientific evidence for a supernatural cause.
10. The Barack Obama Theory
One particularly strange Internet story claimed that extraterrestrials had arrived to celebrate U.S. President Barack Obama's Nobel Peace Prize.
Obama had received the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize only shortly before the Norwegian Spiral.
The timing made the idea an easy subject for jokes and sensational headlines.
There was, of course, no evidence connecting the spiral with Obama or the Nobel ceremony.
Contemporary coverage explicitly mentioned this unusual speculation.
11. A Hoax or Photoshop
The photographs looked so extraordinary that some people initially assumed they had been digitally created.
That suspicion was understandable.
The spiral almost looked like a computer-generated special effect.
However, multiple independent photographs and videos from different locations made a simple Photoshop hoax extremely difficult to maintain.
The event was independently observed across a large region.
The scientific and observational record therefore strongly establishes that the sky phenomenon itself was genuine.
The Russian Confirmation
On December 10, the mystery changed dramatically.
The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed that a Bulava missile had been launched from the Dmitry Donskoy submarine in the White Sea and that the test had failed.
The ministry stated that the first two stages had operated normally but that a technical problem occurred during the third stage.
Contemporary international reporting immediately connected the failed test with the strange light observed over northern Norway.
This was the critical piece of evidence that transformed the event from an unexplained aerial phenomenon into a largely solved scientific mystery.
Scientific Evidence After the Event
The explanation did not stop with Russia's announcement.
Scientists subsequently studied the event using photographs, atmospheric observations, radar and ionospheric measurements.
This provided an important second layer of evidence.
Researchers at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory analyzed ionosonde and meteor-radar observations associated with the missile destruction.
The 2014 paper reported that the missile was destroyed around 200 km above the Kola Peninsula and that the combustion products interacted with the upper atmosphere.
The Ionosphere Was Disturbed
One of the fascinating parts of the event is that scientists detected physical effects after the missile was destroyed.
The 2014 study reported unusual ionospheric effects following the event.
Researchers later examined meteor-radar observations showing unusual echoes associated with the dispersed missile material.
A 2017 study reported irregularities in ionospheric plasma several hours after the destruction.
This is important because it provides an independent physical footprint associated with the missile event.
NORSAR's Independent Observations
Norway's NORSAR, an institution specializing in seismic and infrasonic monitoring, also examined the event.
Its 2010 scientific report recorded the unusual light phenomenon and associated it with the failed Bulava launch.
NORSAR's analysis also detected infrasound signals around the same period.
The report estimated an origin time for the relevant event around 06:45–06:48 UTC, consistent with the missile launch.
However, NORSAR made an important distinction: it did not claim that the infrasound signal was necessarily the same physical event as the high-altitude explosion producing the visible spiral.
That level of caution is important when reconstructing historical events.
The November 2009 Event
There is another interesting detail that is sometimes left out of discussions of the Norwegian Spiral.
A smaller but visually similar phenomenon had reportedly been observed from Hammerfest on November 1, 2009, several weeks before the famous December event.
The witness described a rapidly moving light that grew in apparent size before disappearing.
That event was also associated with a Russian submarine missile test.
According to later research, a Russian submarine launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from the Barents Sea during that earlier event, and the test was reportedly successful.
This earlier occurrence demonstrates that spectacular illuminated rocket plumes were not completely unprecedented in the region.
Was the Norwegian Spiral Actually a UFO?
That depends on what someone means by the word UFO.
If UFO simply means something in the sky that an observer cannot identify at the moment, then yes—the Norwegian Spiral was temporarily a UFO.
People genuinely did not know what they were seeing.
But if UFO is being used to mean an extraterrestrial spacecraft, there is no evidence supporting that interpretation.
The event has a documented connection to a Russian missile launch, physical observations, photographic evidence and scientific modelling.
The most reasonable conclusion is therefore:
The Norwegian Spiral was a real unidentified aerial phenomenon at first, but it was subsequently explained as the optical and atmospheric result of a failed Russian Bulava missile test.
Could Russia's Explanation Have Been a Cover Story?
This question has appeared in UFO discussions for years.
The argument usually goes something like this:
Russia acknowledged a failed missile test, so perhaps officials simply used the missile explanation to conceal something else.
However, this theory faces a major problem.
The missile explanation does not depend solely on the Russian statement.
Independent evidence also supports it.
The evidence includes:
- the documented missile launch
- the timing
- the launch location
- the failed third-stage performance
- observations from several countries
- photographic triangulation
- rocket-plume physics
- atmospheric measurements
- ionospheric effects
- later scientific modelling
The scientific evidence therefore makes a purely fabricated Russian explanation very difficult to sustain.
That does not mean every detail of the missile's failure is known.
It means the basic source of the phenomenon is extremely well supported.
What Is Still Uncertain?
Even though the mystery is largely solved, several details remain less certain than popular articles sometimes suggest.
The exact failure mechanism
The Russian Defence Ministry publicly described a technical failure in the third stage.
Researchers proposed specific mechanisms involving tumbling, stage separation and abnormal exhaust release.
But the complete engineering telemetry is not publicly available.
The exact altitude
Scientific estimates vary within a range.
Approximately 200 km is commonly cited, while later research gives roughly 170–260 km.
The exact dimensions
The apparent size of the spiral is not the physical size of a spacecraft.
It was an expanding cloud, and estimates depend on reconstruction methods and observer locations.
The exact duration
Different observers recorded different portions of the event.
Consequently, descriptions ranging from several minutes to roughly ten minutes appear in the historical record.
The exact appearance from every location
The phenomenon evolved continuously.
Two observers hundreds of kilometres apart could therefore see noticeably different shapes at approximately the same general time.
Why the Case Became So Famous
The Norwegian Spiral became famous because it combined several things that rarely appear together.
It was:
Real.
Photographed.
Seen by many people.
Extremely unusual.
Initially unexplained.
Connected to a genuine military missile launch.
And most importantly, it looked almost impossible.
The photographs showed something resembling a gigantic cosmic structure rather than an ordinary rocket.
That visual impact allowed the story to spread rapidly across newspapers, television, blogs and UFO communities around the world.
The Internet's Role in the Mystery
The case is also an interesting example of how information spreads online.
When the first photographs appeared, viewers did not have enough information to identify the phenomenon.
People therefore filled the information gap with theories.
Within hours, explanations included:
- UFOs
- aliens
- wormholes
- portals
- secret military aircraft
- auroras
- meteors
- experimental technology
- EISCAT
- HAARP
- CERN
- religious signs
- even humorous connections with Barack Obama's Nobel Prize
Then the Russian missile story emerged.
The explanation spread almost as quickly as the mystery itself.
The Norwegian Spiral therefore became a perfect example of the difference between "unexplained right now" and "unexplainable."
What People Thought After the Missile Explanation
Public reaction was mixed.
For many observers, the missile explanation immediately made sense.
Rocket specialists and scientists pointed out that high-altitude exhaust plumes can produce spectacular optical effects, particularly when sunlight illuminates the material from behind.
Others remained skeptical because the spiral looked much more complicated than a normal rocket trail.
Some UFO enthusiasts argued that the missile explanation did not account for every visual detail.
Later photographic analysis, however, showed that the phenomenon was evolving through space and time rather than behaving like a stationary solid object.
Scientific studies subsequently provided a physical model for the spiral, the turquoise colour and the atmospheric effects.
The Final Scientific Picture
The most complete reconstruction looks roughly like this:
1. The Russian submarine Dmitry Donskoy launched a Bulava missile from the White Sea.
2. The missile climbed through the atmosphere.
3. The first two stages reportedly functioned normally.
4. A technical problem occurred during the later stage of flight.
5. The missile lost normal operation and was destroyed/self-destructed.
6. Exhaust and combustion products were released at extreme altitude.
7. The malfunctioning stage's movement produced an unusual rotating/tumbling distribution of the material.
8. The material expanded dramatically in the thin upper atmosphere.
9. Sunlight illuminated the high-altitude cloud while observers below were still in darkness or twilight.
10. The resulting geometry appeared from Norway as an enormous blue-green spiral with a dark center.
11. The cloud continued expanding and dispersing.
12. The phenomenon faded.
13. Atmospheric and ionospheric instruments later recorded effects associated with the missile event.
This explanation is consistent with the major independent evidence collected after the sighting.
So, Was It an Alien Craft?
There is no credible evidence that the Norwegian Spiral was an alien spacecraft.
There is also no evidence of a wormhole, dimensional portal, HAARP experiment, CERN experiment or supernatural event.
The extraordinary appearance of the spiral was real.
The mystery surrounding it was real.
The photographs were real.
But the best-supported explanation is completely terrestrial:
A failed Russian Bulava missile test produced an enormous, sunlight-illuminated exhaust cloud high above the atmosphere.
The case is therefore best classified as an explained aerial phenomenon, rather than an unresolved extraterrestrial mystery.
Why the Norwegian Spiral Still Matters
The case remains fascinating even after its explanation.
It demonstrates how easily a real technological event can look like something from science fiction.
It also shows why multiple independent observations are so valuable.
A single photograph might have been dismissed as Photoshop.
A single witness could have been mistaken.
But photographs from different locations, a documented missile launch, atmospheric physics, scientific modelling and instrument observations all pointed toward the same answer.
The Norwegian Spiral is therefore not simply a UFO story.
It is a remarkable case study in how an apparently impossible event can eventually be reconstructed using science, photography and independent evidence.
